Flash: Interactive Web Animation
by Ken Kimura

You need to know the following before doing this turorial
  • How to use the selection tool, the rectangle tool, the oval tool, and the paint brush tool.
  • What the "stage" is.
  • How to set the line & fill colors on the tool palette.

  1. When you open a new file in Flash, Flash starts you off with one layer and a blank keyframe. Any layer you create will always have a keyframe for it’s first frame. A blank keyframe (one that has no content) appears on the timeline as an empty circle.

  2. Using the rectangle tool, draw a large rectangle on the stage (click and drag). You’ve just drawn a rectangle on the first keyframe of "Layer 1". Because there is now content in the keyframe (the rectangle you just drew), the keyframe now appears as a filled black dot.

  3. Let’s make the rectangle stay on the stage for 25 frames. To do this we must add frames to Layer 1. First, try pressing the F5 key on your keyboard. This will add a frame in front of the playhead. The playhead is the red line with the box on top that indicates waht frame you are seeing on the stage. Add a few more frames this way. Now try holding the shift key while pressing the F5 key. This will remove frames. You can add 24 frames this way, but there is an easier way. (next)

  4. Select the 25th frame in "Layer 1." To do this just click on it on the timeline. (see below)

Now press the F5 key. The rectange will now stay on the stage for 25 frames. To play the movie, press the Return key. Nothing exciting will happen but the playhead will move through the timeline.
