Jazz Night '24
Posted on 04/03/2024
The L-S music program presents Jazz Night ‘24 on Thursday April 4th at 7:00pm in the L-S Auditorium. Admission is free. L-S performing groups include the L-S Jazz Ensemble and combos including the Sisters in Jazz Combo, and the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Jazz Explosion Combo. The Curtis Middle School Select Jazz Band are special guest performers. April is JAM which stands for global Jazz Appreciation Month, an initiative started in 2001 by the Smithsonian Institute to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. Come celebrate JAM with us!

A sample of the music includes:

Chévre! is an original Cuban Cha-Cha by educator and composer Michele Fernández.
Tank! by Yoko Kanno is the high energy funk theme from the anime series Cowboy Bebop.
Two Degrees West, Three Degrees East is a blues tune by John Lewis, pianist and founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Dat Dere is a composition by pianist Bobby Timmons, and was recorded in 1960 by Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

L-S and Curtis students will combine for a “really big band” performance of Herbie Hancock’s Cantaloupe Island which will feature a number of improvised solos from members of both groups.

Live music is always best, though if livestream is a better fit for that night, join us that way instead! It will be broadcast on Sudbury TV educational channel.
